Mathematical Toolkit

In collaboration with Intel and The Mathematical Association, the Mathematical Toolkit has been designed specifically to support the teaching and learning of mathematics for pupils.

New to Web Version 3.0:

The tools have been developed in Adobe Flash so that teachers and pupils can access them via the internet without needing to purchase any software.

The toolkit comes with user guides and activities for teachers and students to follow when using each of the tools, and a troubleshooting guide.

2-D Shapes   launch!

This tool allows the teacher or pupil to create 2-D geometric objects such as quadrilaterals, circles, triangles, lines, arcs, ray segments and vectors on a co-ordinate grid of a specified scale.  Once plotted, the vertices can be labelled and the internal angles, side lengths, area and perimeter revealed. Shapes can then be translated, rotated, reflected and enlarged on the co-ordinate grid using the transformation features of the tool. Each time a shape is transformed, a ghost of its previous position is left on the screen supporting the investigation of sequences of transformations. Users also have the ability to work on shapes data that has been previously saved using the File Open and Save features.

Coordinates and Graphing   launch!

Coordinate graphs can be easily created on a specified set of axes by a mouse click or a tap on an interactive whiteboard. Where it is appropriate, graphs of algebraic functions can be superimposed, encouraging pupils’ conjectures. Up to five colour-coded functions can be plotted on any set of axes and the table of values is displayed alongside the graphs. Still digital images and video clips can be imported as a background onto which coordinate points can be plotted and relationships investigated. Used in this way, real images and videos can be explored and connections made between the shape and the mathematical function that shares that shape. Users also have the ability to work on coordinates and graphing data that has been previously saved using the File Open and Save features.

Charting   launch!

The charting tool enables lists of data to be input and a range of statistical graphs plotted, including bar graphs, pie charts, box and whisker plots and scatter graphs. The summary statistics can also be displayed. Users also have the ability to work on charting data that has been previously charting data using the File Open and Save features.
